The show “FRIENDS”, Cast, Pictures, and Trivia!
This is a show about the lives of six friends living in New York City.
Through ten years you see many emotions: love, romance, friendship, arguing and making up, but no matter what comes along, they handle it together. And at the heart of it all, the most important thing you see is the commitment to one another that these six people share, and that whether they are tied together by blood or by friendship, Ross, (David Schwimmer) Rachel, (Jennifer Aniston) Phoebe, (Lisa Kudrow) Chandler, (Matthew Perry) Monica (Courteney Cox) and Joey (Matt LeBlanc) are a family.
Ross Geller (David Schwimmer)-Ross is a palentologist who works at the Museum of Natural History and is recently divorced from his wife of three years, Carol (Jane Sibbett). He soon finds out that she is pregnant with his child, creating all new feelings and issues in what is already a difficult situation as the reason that Carol left him was because she realized that she was a lesbian. Ross is a somewhat socially awkward kind of guy, who is insecure and therefore has a problem with being jealous when it comes to relationships. In the very first episode you see Rachel Green, whom Ross has been in love with since they were just teenagers. And his all-consuming love for her rises again. They soon embark upon a journey that is filled with many things, but the most important are love and friendship.
Monica Geller (Courteney Cox)-Monica is the younger sister of Ross. She lives alone (as Phoebe had recently moved out) until Rachel shows up unexpectedly with no place to stay and ends up moving in with her. Monica is a talented chef who wants to run her own restaurant one day. She is attractive, a perfectionist, obsessive about cleaning, loyal to her friends and absolutely insane when it comes to competition of any kind (whether it’s against another person or herself). She does however get an attitude when one of her buttons are pushed, one of those being that everyone, Ross especially, like to pick on her for her problems with weight in the past. She is the mother hen of the group and she desperately wants to get married and have children and will not give that dream up for anything, no matter the obstacles.
Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston)-Rachel and Monica were best friends when they were younger; however they haven’t spoken in years. One day Rachel shows up out of the blue on Monica’s doorstep in a wedding gown, having realized the man she was about to marry was a man she didn’t love. Ross is stunned to see her, as is Monica, but she offers her a place to stay anyway, until she is able to get back on her feet. Before long, they are as close as they used to be and stay roommates, despite the ups and downs of her relationship with Ross. Rachel is an extreme fashion enthusiast but has to settle for being a waitress at first. She later goes after her dream of having a career in fashion more seriously, dates many men, and slowly overcomes the rich girl attitudes with which she was raised. She also becomes close to not only Monica, but the rest of the group as well.
Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry)-Chandler lives across the hall from Monica, with his roommate, Joey. His career is data reconfiguration and statistical analysis for a multi-national corporation (at the beginning). He is very cute and sweet, but is known to have a sarcastic and somewhat odd sense of humor. He has a strange family history due to his erotic novelist mother, Nora Bing, (Morgan Fairchild) and a cross-dressing father, Charles Bing, (Kathleen Turner) who sings and dances in a Las Vegas show. He therefore tends to attribute his rather bizarre childhood as the reason for his constant bad luck with women and relationships (of course having the middle name of Muriel can’t help). He also cannot eat Thanksgiving food because his parents told him they were getting divorced over Thanksgiving dinner when he was nine years old. He is without a doubt though, a true, loyal and incredibly supportive friend to all of them.
Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc)-Joey is Chandler’s roommate and close friend. He is a struggling actor who never seems to have any money, but who does seem to have an incredibly large love of food of all kinds. Though when it comes to sharing food, forget it, because “Joey doesn’t share food!” He is Italian to his core with a large family consisting of almost all women; this perhaps is what accounts for Joey’s extreme popularity with the ladies. On the other hand, maybe it’s his catchphrase, “How you doin?” which always seems to work on women of any age, shape, size or status. Although he can be a bit simple-minded at times, he also comes up with some good ideas now and then. And regardless of anything else, he is very sweet, loyal, loving and very, very protective of his friends.
Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow)-Phoebe is the quirky, unusual, self-taught musician of the group. Although it’s music she loves, she makes her living as a masseuse. She sings and writes her own songs, which are in a word, unique, as well as “plays” the guitar. She lived on the streets when she was younger because of her step-mother’s suicide which toughened her up in some ways, but left her innocent and childlike in others. She has a twin sister named Ursula, (who is also played by Kudrow) who is the exact opposite of her; Phoebe is kind and loving while her sister is cruel and uncaring. She lived with Monica until recently but now resides with her grandmother in her apartment, because she simply couldn’t deal with how overbearing and controlling Monica was as a roommate. And while she can be ditzy at times, she is steadfast in her beliefs and a dedicated friend. She is also a strong lover and supporter of animals, as well as a vegetarian.
This series is without question, one of the best I’ve ever seen. There is no season that disappoints you or makes you consider not watching the show any longer. It is full of friendship, love, disappointment, elation and regular problems that most people on the planet deal with on a daily basis. This is a show you can sit down and watch again and again. Ten seasons of enjoyment. I give it 10 out of 10.

Jennifer Aniston (Rachel Green) and her mother stopped speaking to each other after some comments that her mother made about her in a tabloid. Therefore, she refused to invite her mother to her wedding to actor, Brad Pitt. (She and Pitt were later divorced.) Aniston’s mother also wrote a book entitled, “From Mother and Daughter to Friends: A Memoir”.
David Schwimmer was born on his mother’s birthday, November 2nd.
Matthew Perry (Chandler Bing) was actually a top-ranked junior tennis player in Canada, while he was growing up. He ranked 17th nationally in the junior singles category and in the doubles category he came in third.
Lisa Kudrow, though she portrays the slightly ditzy, flaky Phoebe, is nothing like her character. She is actually extremely intelligent, and graduated from Vassar College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychobiology. Originally, she wanted to have a career in the field of research, which she was going to do with her father, who is a physician. However, a friend of her brother’s, Jon Lovitz, encouraged her to act and she instead ended up in show business.
No member of the cast ever made more money than one of the others. “The six of us are far stronger than just one person”, said Lisa Kudrow. The cast also received syndication royalties beginning in the fifth season. At that time, the financial benefit of the piece of the show’s lucrative back and profits had only been given to stars that had ownership rights, like Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Cosby.
Matt LeBlanc’s daughter, Marina Pearl, has a rare brain disorder that affects her motor skills. She started having seizures at less than a year old; however, by the age of 2, her condition had improved.
Courteney Cox (Monica Geller) and David Arquette were divorced in 2013.
Jennifer Aniston’s invention of “The Rachel” haircut has drawn a lot of attention to her over the years. It was copied by a multitude of women in the 90’s.
Phoebe’s mother on Friends was played by Teri Garr. Garr also played Kudrow’s mother in the movie, “Kabluey”.
Series creator David Crane wanted all six actors to be equally prominent, and the series was lauded as being “the first true “ensemble’ show”. The cast went to great lengths to ensure the ensemble format, thereby making sure that no one actor was more important than another. They chose to have collective salary negotiations, they entered into the same categories when it came to awards, and they asked to be photographed all together for magazine covers during the first season. They even became best friends off-screen. So much so that Tom Selleck, who guest starred for several seasons, said he sometimes felt left out. The official farewell commemorative book, “Friends ‘Til the End”, had separate interviews with each of them, and they all said that the cast had become family to them.
David Schwimmer turned down the role of “Agent J” (played by Will Smith) in the movie, “Men In Black”.

When Courteney Cox went into labor, it was on her fifth wedding anniversary. She gave birth to her daughter, Coco, the next day, which was also two days before her 40th birthday. Her daughter’s name was actually the result of a nickname that Courteney’s friends had given to her mother while growing up, “Mama Coco”. This was the result of a compromise reached between her and husband, David Arquette. Because although she wanted her daughter to be called Courteney, as both she and her mother were both named, David is half Jewish and it is against Jewish tradition to name a baby after a living person. Additionally, Jennifer Aniston is Coco’s godmother.
Like her character Phoebe, Lisa Kudrow is also a vegetarian.
After Friends ended, Matt LeBlanc starred in the spin-off show, “Joey”. It lasted for only two seasons.

And though she had always known that her paternal great-grandmother, Mera Mordejovich, had been murdered during World War II by the Nazi’s, she was incredibly shocked to find out in 2010 on a trip to Ilya Belarus, that her grandmother had actually been ‘killed and burned’ with 900 other Jews in the town during the Holocaust.

Originally, Jon Favreau was offered the part of Chandler Bing; he later came back as a guest star. Also, Courteney Cox was supposed to play Rachel, but she asked to play Monica instead. Janeane Garofalo was offered the role of Monica, but turned it down. Jamie Gertz did as well.
When only sixteen years old, Lisa Kudrow underwent rhinoplasty in order to make her nose smaller.
Though all were good friends on the series, Jennifer Aniston was particularly close to both Matthew Perry and Courteney Cox.
When Matthew Perry auditioned for the part of Chandler Bing, he actually needed no script due to the fact that he already knew the pilot by heart. The reason for this was because before he had the opportunity to audition himself, he had been assisting a friend with the part.
Courteney Cox, sadly, has had a total of eight miscarriages. The first was before her daughter, Coco, was born, and the other seven were afterwards.
Due to a bet between Bruce Willis and Matthew Perry on the set of the “Whole Nine Yards”, Willis did a two-episode guest-starring role on the series for free. Perry won.

The line was, “Chicks cannot hold their smoke, dat’s what it is”. She thought it was from the movie, “Breakfast Club”, Perry however thought it was from, “Weird Science”. They then began betting with each other with the amount starting at $20, but as the day wore on, it kept getting higher. At one point, they heard that Judd Nelson was shooting his show, “Suddenly Susan”, on a nearby stage, so they went to him to find out the answer. Cox won, and when Leno asked her what the bet ended up being, she sneezed and rang a bell. Moments later, Perry walked out onto the stage with a tissue in his hand, and Cox said to Leno, “he’s going to be my man slave for the next five months”.
