The Show, Cast, And Trivia!
This series is a medical drama and a spin-off of the popular “Grey’s Anatomy”. It follows the character of Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh), to California, and a new life. Addison leaves Seattle, and joins the private practice of Oceanside Health and Wellness, where her best friend, Naomi Bennett (Audra McDonald) is a partner. Upon arriving Addison realizes that no one else is aware that she’s been hired, so her reception at first is somewhat cool. However, it doesn’t take long for her to become a major part of the group, as well as completely intertwined in her co-workers’ lives.
Addison Montgomery is a gorgeous, double-board certified, neonatal surgeon of world-class status with a killer smile. She is of course, the ex-wife of Derek Sheperd (Patrick Dempsey), from “Grey’s Anatomy”, as well as the ex-mistress of Mark Sloan (Eric Dane). But she decides that she simply needs a change, so she joins this practice, in the hopes of starting a new life and finding a new love. Although her career is amazing, her personal life is not quite so stellar. She can’t seem to find just the right man for her, at just the right time. Also, she has always wanted a baby, but her fertility issues keep preventing her from achieving this precious goal.
Sam Bennett (Taye Diggs) is a doctor who specializes in internal medicine. He is also the sexy, hot, ex-husband of Addison’s best friend, Naomi. Sam and Addison live next to each other on the beach, and end up having many long conversations together out on their decks. Sam and Naomi still have feelings for each other, and despite not being able to remain married have remained close friends and work partners. They also have a daughter named, Maya (Geffri Maya Hightower), and are trying to deal with learning how to co-parent effectively.
Naomi Bennett is a reproductive endocrinologist and fertility specialist who has been best friends with Addison since college. She is beautiful and incredibly talented, and she works every day to help create life. Naomi is also dealing with her divorce and trying to raise her daughter, as well as run the practice. She occasionally uses food as a substitute for sex, or when she’s upset, but other than that, manages to deal with her problems as efficiently and as effectively as possible.
Pete Wilder (Tim Daly) is an alternative medicine specialist. He is sexy but aloof, which you find out has a lot to do with his deceased wife. They had an unhappy marriage and he hasn’t been able to forgive her for it even though she’s gone. He also has no intention of ever marrying again, which makes the attraction between him and their new partner, (Addison), a little tough to deal with.
Cooper Freedman (Paul Adelstein) is the pediatrician of the group. He is funny, and sweet, with a boyish charm. He is able to bond well with his patients, who seem able to trust him quickly. His best friend is Violet (Amy Brenneman), whom he rushes to with all of his problems, although not nearly as often as she comes to him with hers. Cooper does have one small problem, and that is he is addicted to sex. But despite this, he is a nice man and an incredibly good person who is always ready to help out a friend or a patient.
Charlotte King (KaDee Strickland) is the chief of staff at St. Ambrose Hospital. She’s sexy and smart with an attitude that would knock out a prizefighter! Actually, she has quite a good heart, but it’s deliberately covered up so that very few people can see it. Charlotte, though not into relationships, is happy to have sex whenever she can get it. This leads her in a very short time to Cooper. A relationship worth forging for them both.
Violet Turner is the psychiatrist of the bunch, although at times it does seem like she needs one of her own. But, she is quite good at what she does, managing to help re-direct patients’ angers and frustrations from damaging behavior toward better and healthier living. Her personal life always seems to interfere in one way or another, though she does try hard to overcome it. Her best friend, Coop, (Cooper), helps to keep things under control for her….most of the time!
Dell Parker (Chris Lowell) is the receptionist at the practice. He is also a qualified nurse and is training to be a mid-wife. He has many varied duties, and is counted upon by all who work there. However, he does have problems of his own. He was abused when he was growing up, and his mother left him when he was young to be raised by his grandparents. In addition, though no one is at first aware of it, he turns out to have a 6 year-old daughter, Betsey (Hailey Sole), from a relationship that he had when he was seventeen. And there is also the fact that he is in love….with Naomi! This, of course, causes a few problems along the way.
Sheldon Wallace (Brian Benben), who comes along in season 2, is a psychiatrist as well. He originally works for another medical practice in the building, “Pacific Wellcare”. Later, he joins the “Seaside Wellness Center” (which is Pacific Wellcare and Oceanside Health and Wellness) when the medical practices merge. Sheldon is single, sweet, dignified and very kind. He dates several of the women within the practice and is generally well-liked by everyone.
Amelia Sheperd (Caterina Scorsone) is Addison’s former sister-in-law, and like her brother, Derek, is also an amazing neurosurgeon. She comes to consult on a surgery at a nearby hospital, but in the end, asks for a job at the newly merged, “Seaside Wellness Center”. Although Derek and Addison are divorced, Amelia still views her as both a sister and family. She is sexy and beautiful, but does have one major issue from her past; she used to have a dependency on prescription medication.
Jake Reilly (Benjamin Bratt), who likes Naomi, is also a reproductive endocrinologist and fertility specialist, appears on the show in season 5, and joins the practice. Jake is handsome, hot, and sexy beyond words, with a daughter in college who has graduated from medical school. He is also divorced, due to his wife having problems with drugs for a long time. After trying everything to help her, (even beating up a drug addict), he finally had to divorce her. Addison and Jake first meet at a grocery store, then a coffee store, and without talking about their careers or really knowing who the other was, they decide to go on a trip, but Addison changes her mind at the last minute. Then Jake shows up for work. The attraction between the two of them is still evident, both to them and everyone else.
Mason Warner (Griffin Gluck), an addition to the cast in season 5, is an 8-year old boy, who was born from a one-night stand. We find out that he is actually Cooper’s son, but Cooper never knew about him. His mother, Erica (A.J. Langer), has sought Cooper out because she has found out that she has cancer, and she has no one else to leave him with. After getting past his anger, he gets to know his son, and very quickly comes to love him.
This show is interesting, fast-paced, covers a myriad of different topics, and is very enjoyable to watch for all of its 6 seasons. Chances are if you like “Grey’s Anatomy”, you will like this. It also has a lot of crossovers from “Grey’s”, so you get the chance to follow characters from both shows. I give it 7 out of 10.

When Pete (Tim Daly), has a new girlfriend named, Lisa, Sam (Taye Diggs) tells him that he likes her. In real-life, the character of Lisa is played by Taye Diggs’ actual wife, Idina Menzel.
Kate Walsh (Addison), appeared in the movie, “Under the Tuscan Sun”, with former Grey’s Anatomy co-star, Sandra Oh (Cristina Yang), in 2003. The role she played was the lesbian partner of Sandra Oh’s character, Patti.
The company of Boyfriend LLC, (a beauty and lifestyle company), was founded by Kate Walsh. They launched their first product in November of 2010, a perfume called “Boyfriend”. Walsh’s fragrance train case, (which included the Boyfriend eau de perfume, pulse point oil and votive candles), sold out on the very first day, which exceeded all sales expectations.
Many of the exterior shots for Private Practice are shot in Santa Monica, California. The Oceanside Health and Wellness Building is actually located at the corner of 4th and Wilshire Boulevard, in Santa Monica.
Taye Diggs’ actual name is, Scott Leo Diggs. The nickname, “Taye”, comes from playfully saying his name, Scott, as “Scottay”.
Tim Daly (Pete Wilder), is the younger brother of actress, Tyne Daly, former star of the popular, “Cagney & Lacey”.
By the time she was 28 years old, Audra McDonald (Naomi Bennett), was a three-time Tony Award Winner. This put her in with Shirley Booth, Gwen Verdon, and Zero Mostel, for achieving this impressive accomplishment within five years.
Caterina Scorsone was cast as Amelia Sheperd, when Eric Stoltz, who was directing an episode of Grey’s Anatomy, and heard about the role suggested her to Shonda Rhimes. His reasoning was that she resembled Patrick Dempsey (Derek Sheperd), who would be playing her brother.
Sam and Addison are shown living in beachfront houses next door to each other. In reality, these are actually rare beachfront homes in Malibu that cost $4 million dollars or more.
Amy Brenneman (Violet Turner), is quite actively pro-choice, The “We Had Abortions” petition that ran in Ms. Magazine in October of 2006, was signed by Brenneman.
KaDee Strickland (Charlotte King), was the Homecoming Queen, in elementary, middle and high school, as well as student council president and cheerleader.
KaDee Strickland (Charlotte), was one of the actors who picketed right beside the writers during the “Writers Guild of America strike” of 2007-2008.
Tim Daly (Pete), climbed Mount Kilimanjaro.
After returning from the Screen Actors Guild Awards in January of 2013, Taye Diggs found a burglar in his home and apprehended him, then held him there until the police arrived.
Kate Walsh posed nude for the cover of “Shape” magazine at age 44.
Kadee Strickland worked with the “Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network”, to make certain that her sexual assault storyline was as realistic as possible. She wanted to ensure that she did not underplay just how horrible and devastating a rape and it’s after effects truly are. Also, she was nervous about shooting the scene itself, some of the people in the show’s crew had gone through some similar experiences, and were survivors.
Caterina Scorsone (Amelia), was pregnant in real-life and they decided it should be written into the storyline on the show. Scorsone had a baby girl, Eliza, on July 6, 2012, delivered at home with the help of a mid-wife.
Audra McDonald (Naomi), left Private Practice so that she could spend more time with her family who are located in New York. She has been commuting through all four of the seasons that she was a cast member, and even though she will no longer be on as a regular, she will be making guest appearances from time to time.
Brian Benben (Sheldon), is married to actress, Madeline Stowe, in real-life, and the couple owns an actual working cattle ranch in Texas.
Benjamin Bratt (Jake), was on People magazine’s list of “50 Most Beautiful ” in 1999.
Amy Brenneman’s (Violet), mother in real-life, was one of the first women to ever graduate from Harvard College, and she is a superior court judge
