The Show “Breaking Bad”, Cast, Pictures, and Trivia!
This series is set in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The story revolves around a man who is diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer.
A struggling high school chemistry teacher, Walter White (Bryan Cranston) is faced with that most horrible of realities, how do you provide for the family you are about to leave, forever? This man’s answer: Go from being a normal law-abiding citizen, to a criminal who begins illegally producing and selling the drug, methamphetamine.
Walter White (Bryan Cranston)-Walter is a high school teacher and former chemist who, in a former life, actually studied at the University of Caltech with some of the finest minds available in the field. He used to own a company that was called, “Gray Matter” with a friend of his by the name of, Elliot Schwartz. At a certain point however, he sold his shares in the company. He now teaches chemistry to a bunch of teenagers, while coming home every night to his wife, Skyler (Anna Gunn), who is at the moment pregnant with their second child. Their first child is a son in his teens with cerebral palsy, Walter, Jr. (RJ Mitte). One day, he is shocked to find out that he has approximately two years to live due to a diagnosis of Stage III lung cancer. Not knowing what to do or where to turn to, Walter then comes up with a plan to make as much money as he can, as quickly as possible, in order to be able to leave his family all that he can. He then teams up with a former student of his, Jesse Pinkman, (Aaron Paul) who is a local meth cook. With Pinkman’s assistance, he is now able to embark upon his new life, a life of crime.
Skyler White (Anna Gunn)-Skyler is the wife of Walter and the mother of their son, Walt, Jr. She is incredibly protective of her family, especially her children. She is a stay-at-home mother to whom family is all-important. Upon her realization of Walters’ condition and the direct consequences that it will bring, she goes to great lengths to be the one who tries to hold the family together. She also searches for the best treatments available for her husband’s disease, along with helping to manage the family’s budget. She is a patient woman for the most part, but is at the same time thankful, to have the support and friendship of her sister, Marie (Betsy Brandt). A person to whom she is able to confide her deepest thoughts and fears to.
Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul)-Jesse is a former student of Walter White’s, an occasional user of methamphetamines and what’s known as a “meth cook”. His nickname around the area is, “Cap’n Cook”. He comes from an upper middle class type of home, is the oldest child and was never a victim of abuse. Despite all this, he ended up using drugs anyway, which led to his eventual banishment from the family home. He does, however, have a strong love for his brother, who unlike Jesse is a strong, outstanding student and person.
Hank Schrader (Dean Norris)-Hank is the brother-in-law of Skyler, married to her sister, Marie, and a DEA agent in Albuquerque. A somewhat brusque man, he has seen it all where the subject of drugs is concerned. He also still has many ambitions about climbing the ladder in the DEA. At one point, Walter was out on a ride-along with Hank, and that is how he hooked up with Jesse in the first place, as the DEA was trying to bust his operation.
Marie Schrader (Betsy Brandt)-Marie is Skyler’s sister, her closest friend and her only real confidant. She is Hank’s wife, but they have no children. She is a somewhat intrusive woman, especially where her sister is concerned. She also has a problem with kleptomania as well as being image obsessed, despite what it could do to the career of her husband.
Walter White, Jr. (RJ Mitte)-Walt is the firstborn child of Skyler and Walter White. He was born with cerebral palsy but is still able to attend the high school where his father is employed. He does, however, need the help of braces to be able to walk and also has a small speech impediment as well. But in spite of all of it, he is also very much the typical teenager. He blames his parents for things, challenges them and has the attitude that most young people of that age seem to have, in addition to having an almost indomitable spirit. He loves his father very much and even tries to assist the family financially after his father’s diagnosis by trying to think of unusual ways to make money.
Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk)-Saul is a somewhat shady lawyer, who represents many highly influential criminals such as Gus Fring, but is also the lawyer for Walter and Jesse. He is known to most of Albuquerque because of his late-night TV commercials with the catchphrase, “Better Call Saul!” and “I fight for YOU, Albuquerque!” He is actually very skilled at what he does, and also works with a private investigator named, Mike, who takes orders from Saul, legal or not.
Steven Gomez (Steven Michael Quezada)-Steven or “Gomie” as he is sometimes referred to, is both the partner and friend of Hank Schrader. A Norteno, Gomie has a far-reaching understanding about both the structure and the order of Mexican gangs. He is married to a woman named, Bianca. And though he is generally a pretty easy-going type of guy, he has been known to give as good as he gets. Including teasing his somewhat gruff partner at times.
Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks)-Mike is a private investigator who works with both Saul Goodman and Gus Fring. He is also an all-purpose cleaner and hitman for Gus, as well as a hitman for hire. A former beat cop, his life now revolves around crime. He has a broad grasp when it comes to surveillance equipment, police procedures and forensic evidence. And strangely enough, he is also a strong family man who will go to any lengths to protect and take care of the ones he loves.
Gustavo ‘Gus’ Fring (Giancarlo Esposito)-Gus is the head of one of the biggest methamphetamine production and distribution operations in the United States. His front for the “meth” business in Albuquerque is a small chain of Mexican restaurants called, “Los Pollos Hermanos”. He is connected to Walter and Jesse through Saul Goodman, when the two started looking for a large-scale buyer for their product. Gus is an extremely secretive and low-profile man for someone who is, for all intents and purposes, a drug kingpin.
This show is original and totally different from most of the TV series that are out there. It manages to incorporate the problems that come from having a deadly disease and the sympathy you feel for that character, while at the same time showing a person who is on the path to moral and almost complete degradation. I give it a 9 out of 10.

The first episode of the second half of season five is actually dedicated to a teenage Superfan of the show, Kevin Cordasco. He died of cancer in March of 2013. Before his unfortunate and premature death, he was actually given the opportunity to read the final scripts of the show so that he would know how it ended. Kevin did get the opportunity to meet members of the show though, and among these were Bryan Cranston and Vince Gilligan.

When the characters are supposed to be smoking ‘meth’ on the show, they are in actuality smoking rock candy or sugar. They do not inhale.
While filming the part of the show where Wendy the prostitute was being introduced, actual filming had to be briefly stopped. The reason for this was because a non-actor tried to pick up actress Julia Minesci (Wendy), mistaking her for a real life prostitute.
Giancarlo Esposito (Gus Fring) was one of the chorus of children who sang the theme song to the television show, “The Electric Company”.
Aaron Paul’s father is a retired Christian Baptist minister.
RJ Mitte, who plays the role of Walt, Jr. on the series, actually has cerebral palsy in real life, just like his character on the show. The difference being that Mitte’s form of the disease is much milder than the character’s is. He had to learn to slow his speech down for the part as well as learn to walk with braces.
Samuel L. Jackson, who plays character Nick Fury in “The Avengers”, is also an enormous fan of the Breaking Bad series. When both things were shooting on different lots in the same studio in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jackson wanted to do a cameo on the show. He wanted to just walk onto the ‘Los Pollos Hermanos’ set, totally unannounced and dressed as Nick Fury, just like he was a customer buying chicken from the restaurant. Unfortunately, this did not work out.

Bryan Cranston is such a huge baseball fan, that when his 40th birthday came around his wife threw him a party at Dodgers Stadium.
At the beginning of each episode of the show, the chemical formula C10H15N along with the number 149.24 and the word “Meth” is seen just before the appearance of the Breaking Bad title. The reason for this is because C10H15N is the formula for methamphetamine and has the molecular weight of 149.24.
Steven Michael Quezada (Steven “Gomie” Gomez) partnered with Marco Nunez and executive producer Mark Padilla in 2010, to host his very own late-night talk show, “The After After Party with Steven Michael Quezada”.
Marius Stan, who plays the part of “Bogdan Wolynetz” on the show, is an actual chemistry genius in real life. He has a PhD in Chemistry and still works in the field. The irony being that the main plot point of the show is that Walter White is a chemistry genius. This was actually Stan’s first time acting.
Anna Gunn has two daughters, Emma and Ella Rose.
One of the more interesting facts about the show is that the characters and their values are represented by the colors that they wear.

After several networks rejected the pitch for the Breaking Bad series, FX then stepped in and began to develop a pilot. Later however, they decided to pass on the idea and went with a different show that was meant to draw in more female viewers, “Dirt”, with former “Friends” co-star, Courtney Cox. The project was eventually developed and premiered on the AMC channel instead.

In Breaking Bad, the Whites’ baby girl was named, Holly. There have also been many more mentions of her throughout his career.
Actress Betsy Brandt (Marie Schrader) was pregnant in real life during season two of the series. Because the character of Skyler was also pregnant at that time, when Brandt eventually reached the time in her pregnancy that Skyler was at as well, they did pick-up shots with her as the fake naked stomach on actress, Anna Gunn.
